Respected Citizens and Voters of PA Senate District 48 in Lebanon County and parts of York and Dauphin Counties,
My name is Michael Schroeder, and I ask for your vote.
Who am I? And why am I running as a Democrat for PA Senate District 48 in the special election on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020?
I'm a college history professor, an award-winning scholar, and a longtime community activist in Annville and the Lebanon Valley. I'm a husband and father and grandfather. I'm a carpenter, builder, and onetime journeyman residential roofer. I know how to work with my hands and my head, how to serve as a member of a team, how to lead, and how to listen with my heart.
I threw my hat into the ring for this Senate seat because even though I love my life as a teacher and local activist, I feel I can make a bigger difference in Harrisburg. We live in anxious, troubled, scrambled-up times, statewide and nationally, as around the world. And I'm prepared to make a positive difference.
How? By making health care and prescription drugs affordable for everyone. Tackling the opioid crisis. Developing a fairer tax system in which the wealthy pay more. Ensuring quality public education. Addressing the reality of human-caused climate change. Getting big money out of politics. These are among the main issues that animate me in this race.
For example, no hardworking, taxpaying Pennsylvania family should have to choose between buying needed medicine for a loved one and putting food on the table for their children. No Pennsylvania worker should have to hold down two jobs to make ends meet. No public official should be using public office for private gain – something far too common in Harrisburg today.
It's time to send a message. It's time for a change.
I offer fresh, intelligent, authentic public service with integrity and transparency. I've never run for or held public office. Frankly, I've never much thought about it. I don't know any lobbyists and owe no political debts. My goal is serving others and trying to make the world a better place. A good chunk of every day I spend performing some kind of volunteer public service. This Senate seat offers an opportunity to ramp it up a few notches.
To help create a future for all.
Harrisburg needs a breath of fresh air. Frankly, in terms of political representation, so do you.
I invite you to email me and ask me anything about my politics or my position on any issue. I'll do my best to answer honestly and forthrightly.
I also invite you to join my campaign to bring integrity and a breath of fresh air to Harrisburg — at least in our district. See the *JOIN US* page of our website for more on how you might help.
I humbly ask that you please mark your calendar now, and on that cold second Tuesday in January, vote for me, Michael Schroeder, and fresh, authentic representation in Harrisburg.
That’s Tuesday, January 14.
Respectfully and hopefully,
